Staying Alert and Praying for Discernment

In times of chaos and crisis, when fear runs high and uncertainty fills the air, people naturally look for help, direction, and hope. Emergencies bring out both the best and the worst in humanity. While many rush to help their neighbors, others—driven by greed or darkness—see opportunity in disaster. Sadly, scammers thrive when people are desperate, distracted, and emotionally vulnerable.

As God’s Prepared Warriors, we train our hands for battle and our hearts for faith. We plan, prepare, and protect—but our preparedness must go beyond food, water, and supplies. We must be prepared spiritually and mentally to recognize deception when it comes knocking. The Bible warns us clearly in Matthew 10:16, “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; therefore, be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”

The enemy—both spiritual and earthly—loves confusion. He uses it to cloud judgment and plant traps. That’s why discernment is one of a Warrior’s greatest tools of survival.

The Practical Side: Recognizing and Avoiding Scams

When a disaster strikes—whether it’s a hurricane, blackout, or cyberattack—scammers quickly adapt their tactics. They know people are scared and will act fast without checking details. These schemes may come through fake text messages, phone calls, crowdfunding links, or even door-to-door imposters claiming to be aid workers.

Here are practical steps every Warrior should practice:

  1. Pause Before Responding. If you get a call, email, or text asking for money or personal information—pause. Take a breath and don’t act out of emotion. Scammers use urgency as a weapon.

  2. Verify Every Source. Look up official contact information on verified websites. Never trust links from random messages or social media. Call the organization directly before donating or providing details.

  3. Guard Your Information. Keep your personal, financial, and identifying information private. A real agency will never pressure you for immediate payment or sensitive data.

  4. Secure Your Digital Life. Use strong passwords and update them regularly. Back up important files offline. Be mindful of what you post publicly—scammers use social media to track victims.

  5. Talk with Your Tribe. In moments of chaos, isolation breeds vulnerability. Communicate with your family, church, or preparedness community before making decisions. One Warrior’s caution can protect many others.

Preparedness isn’t paranoia—it’s wisdom in action. Proverbs 22:3 reminds us, “The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.”

The Spiritual Side: The Enemy’s Real Tactics

Beyond the physical scams we see in emails and phone calls lies a greater deception — the spiritual kind. The Bible warns that our true enemy is not flesh and blood. Ephesians 6:12

He uses fear, distraction, and confusion to pull God’s people off mission.

Satan is the master deceiver. During crises, he whispers lies like:

  • “You’re alone.”

  • “God won’t provide.”

  • “You can’t trust anyone.”

These are spiritual scams meant to drain your faith and fill you with doubt. But a Warrior rooted in Scripture knows the truth. We resist lies with the Word of God and prayerful discernment.

When you feel uncertain, stop and pray:

“Lord, give me Your wisdom. Help me to see what is true and to reject every deception of the enemy. Guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.”

Spiritual preparedness is about keeping your armor on — faith as your shield, truth as your belt, and the Word of God as your sword (Ephesians 6:13–17).

When you prepare physically and spiritually, you build a hedge of protection around your household that scammers—human or demonic—cannot easily breach.

Preparedness isn’t just about storing supplies; it’s about storing wisdom. The more grounded we are in God’s truth, the harder it becomes for deception to take root. In every crisis, remember: fear makes people foolish, but faith makes people firm.

As God’s Prepared Warriors, we are called to stay ready—body, mind, and spirit. We cannot stop evil from trying to deceive us, but we can stop it from succeeding.

So, stay alert. Be wise. Keep your faith strong and your discernment sharp. And above all, don’t grow weary in doing good, for in due season, you will reap if you do not give up (Galatians 6:9).
