Do You Produce Good Fruit or Bad Fruit

“A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes. A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.” — Luke 6:43-45 (NLT)

Every tree bears fruit according to its nature. An apple tree will never bear oranges, and a thorn bush will never yield sweet grapes. In the same way, our hearts — the spiritual soil of our lives — determine the kind of fruit we produce. Jesus teaches that the words we speak, the actions we take, and the attitudes we hold all flow from what fills our hearts.

If our hearts are rooted in bitterness, pride, or selfishness, we will produce fruit that reflects those things — sharp, sour, and unkind. But if our hearts are cultivated in love, humility, and faith, the fruit of our lives will be rich with kindness, gentleness, and grace.

We can’t fake good fruit for long. Eventually, what’s in us will show through how we treat others, how we respond to pressure, and how we live when no one’s watching. That’s why it’s so important to keep our hearts close to Jesus. He is the true vine, and when we abide in Him, His Spirit nourishes us to produce good fruit — the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control Galatians 5:22–23).

Today, take inventory of your fruit. Are your words encouraging or harsh? Do your actions build others up or tear them down? Ask the Holy Spirit to prune away anything that’s not from God and to fill your heart with His truth, so that your life bears fruit that glorifies Him.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father, search my heart today. Show me the fruit of my life and help me to see where I need to change. Uproot anything that doesn’t honor You, and fill me with Your Spirit so I may produce good fruit that reflects Your love and truth. Let my words, actions, and attitudes bring You glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What kind of “fruit” are your words and actions producing right now?

  2. What steps can you take today to let God prune and strengthen your heart?

  3. How can you abide more deeply in Christ this week to bear lasting fruit?
