As we enter another hurricane season, our hearts turn back to Hurricane Helene last year. It wasn’t just a storm—it was a spiritual lesson in preparedness, dependency, and community strength. Let’s look at what happened, what we learned, and how God’s faithfulness carried His people through—and can do the same for us.
What We Remember: Helene’s Impact
Catastrophic devastation: A Category 4 storm at landfall, Helene caused 251 deaths and an estimated $78 billion in damage across the Southeast.
Unprecedented flooding, especially in the Carolinas and Appalachian region, washed out entire towns, bridges, and roads—roads remain closed months later.
Communications breakdown: 1.3 million in Florida lost power; remote North Carolina and Tennessee areas lost cell service and access roads.
False information spread fast—rumors and conspiracy theories complicated rescue and relief efforts.
Key Lessons Learned
1. Infrastructure Can Fail—and Fast
Utility poles collapse. Bridges wash out. Roads disappear.
Prepare physical escape routes and mental preparedness for sudden loss of basic systems.
“The prudent see danger and take refuge…” — Proverbs 22:3
2. Diversify Essentials
Communities deployed solar generators, satellite phones, and drones when traditional resources failed.
Knowing that Redundant options (power, comms, lighting) keep you resilient.
The community that I am a part of, "We the People Liberty and Justice had a hand in this effort. All of us pulled together with supplies, delivering of these supplies, helping hands, and many prayers. WE THE PEOPLE | We The People
3. Fight Misinformation with Truth
Official channels struggled to combat online rumors.
When in a crisis, commit to sharing verified updates and speaking hope.
In times of crisis people need to know that there is Hope in Jesus!
4. Faith and Community Endure
Southern Appalachian towns exemplified neighborly love—working together to rescue, feed, and rebuild. True strength arises when faith springs into practical action. My prayer is for our nation to come together like this but not because a disaster happened. That we lay down the things that divide us.
Preparing Now: Practical Steps
Map alternate routes: Include rural roads in case highways fail.
Stock diverse gear: Solar chargers, batteries, emergency lighting, satellite comms.
Safeguard documents: Keep IDs, insurance papers in waterproof containers.
Plan community outreach: Know who may need help—elderly, neighbors, church leaders.
Stay rooted in truth:
Limit sensational news.
Speak peace and biblical hope.
Anchored in Faith
Jesus urged us to build on the rock — not the sand. Helene’s wrath reminded us all: structures fall.
Bridges collapse.
But God’s kingdom stands forever.
In preparation, may our hearts be anchored in steadfast trust, not frantic fear. When storms roll in:
We don’t panic. We pause.
We don’t doubt. We pray.
We don’t isolate. We serve.
Our preparation is a witness: a bold declaration that God equips His people to stand strong, storm after storm.
God’s Promises in the Storm
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” – Psalm 46:1
“The wise store up knowledge…” – Proverbs 10:14
Let’s be wise, faith-filled, and generous—because when the storm hits, God wants His prepared warriors to shine His light.
