Staying Protected and Relying on God’s Power

A Blog by God's Prepared Warrior

When the Lights Go Out

In a moment, everything can change. The sky darkens, thunder roars, lightning cracks — and then, silence… followed by the unsettling darkness of a power outage. For many, this is a mere inconvenience. But for God's Prepared Warriors, it's a moment of clarity — a reminder to be both physically prepared and spiritually anchored.

As storms increase in frequency and strength across our nation, we are reminded that while we cannot control nature, we can control how we prepare. Just like we fortify our homes, God fortifies our hearts when we place our trust in Him. In today’s blog, we’ll look into the practical steps of lightning and outage safety, while also reflecting on how to rely on God’s eternal power when the world around us loses its own.

The Practical Side

Preparedness for Storms & Outages

1. Lightning Safety Essentials:

  • Stay Indoors During a Storm: Avoid being outdoors, especially in open fields or near tall trees. If you're caught outside, find shelter in a building or vehicle immediately.

  • Unplug Electronics: Lightning can cause power surges that destroy electronics. Unplug sensitive devices to protect them.

  • Avoid Plumbing and Corded Phones: Water and wires conduct electricity. Don’t shower, wash dishes, or use landlines during lightning storms.

  • Stay Away from Windows: Strong winds and lightning strikes can shatter glass and injure you.

2. Power Outage Preparedness:

  • Backup Power: Invest in battery-powered chargers, solar-powered generators, or gas-powered generators for extended outages.

  • Lighting: Store headlamps, lanterns, and flashlights with extra batteries. Avoid using open-flame candles unless necessary.

  • Food & Water: Keep at least a 72-hour supply of non-perishable food and clean water. A manual can opener is a must.

  • Communication: Have a battery-operated or hand-crank NOAA weather radio to receive emergency alerts. Walkie-talkies or GMRS radios also help keep in touch with your family or MAG (Mutual Assistance Group).

  • Home Safety: Install surge protectors and consider lightning rods for rural or exposed properties. Know where your breaker box is and how to safely turn off power if needed.

The Spiritual Side: When Earthly Power Fails, God’s Power Remains

When the lights go out, we are reminded how fragile our systems are. But God’s power? It never fails.

Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

When the physical lights go out, God’s presence is the light that fills our souls.

Power outages can bring fear, anxiety, or helplessness — but those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, unshaken. (Psalm 125:1)

Let these moments become opportunities to lean into His presence. When the distractions of technology are removed and we sit in stillness, His voice becomes clearer. Instead of fearing the dark, rest in the Light of His Word. Use these times to gather your family, pray, read Scripture by lantern light, and worship together.

Our God does not go offline. He does not sleep. He is the power grid of our hearts — steady, faithful, eternal.

Be Ready, Be Rooted

Lightning and outages may shake the world around us, but they don’t have to shake us. God’s Prepared Warriors are not just ready with tools and supplies — we are ready with faith, wisdom, and peace in the middle of every storm.

So the next time the thunder rolls and the lights flicker, take a deep breath. You are not alone. Your lamp is trimmed. Your heart is full. And your God is with you.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” – Psalm 27:1
