Prepping 101: Creating a Communication and Evacuation Plan – Stay Connected, Stay Safe

godspreparedwarrio

Introduction

In a crisis, clear communication and a solid evacuation plan can be the difference between safety and chaos. Being able to contact loved ones and knowing when and how to leave a potentially dangerous situation are vital components of preparedness. In this installment, we’ll cover the basics of creating an emergency communication and evacuation plan for you and your family.

Preparedness is more than just having supplies; it's also about having a plan in place. Natural disasters, civil unrest, or other emergencies can disrupt normal channels of communication and safe travel. Being prepared with a communication strategy and a plan for evacuation can give you peace of mind, knowing you’ve taken steps to stay connected and find safety when it’s needed most.

The Practical Side

Setting Up Communication and Evacuation Plans

  1. Developing Your Communication Plan

    • Family Contact Information: Start by gathering contact information for each family member, including cell phone numbers, email addresses, and social media profiles.

    • Designate a Point of Contact: Choose a trusted person outside your immediate area to act as the primary contact. In case local communication fails, each family member can check in with this person.

    • Emergency Communication Tools: Consider using a mix of cell phones, walkie-talkies, and HAM or GMRS radios. In some scenarios, cell networks may be down, and radios can provide reliable alternatives. Have backup batteries or portable chargers.

    • Establish Communication Protocols: Set times to check in and confirm each person’s safety. For instance, agree to send a quick message every few hours in an emergency to update each other.

  2. Creating Your Evacuation Plan

    • Identify Possible Exits and Routes: Map out multiple routes from your home to safer locations, considering both major roads and back routes. Research nearby shelters, hotels, or friends’ homes where you could stay if needed.

    • Choose Safe Meeting Points: Identify at least two meeting locations outside your neighborhood: one nearby (like a park) and one farther away (in case local routes are compromised).

    • Pack a Go-Bag for Each Family Member: Include essentials like water, food, first aid, a flashlight, extra clothes, and any necessary medications. Keep these bags packed and ready to grab in an instant.

    • Practice Your Plan: Regularly review and practice your evacuation plan with your family. Make sure everyone knows where to go and what to do if an emergency strikes.

The Spiritual Side: Trusting God’s Guidance in Uncertain Times

As God's Prepared Warriors, while we prepare practically, we also rely on God’s wisdom and guidance. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Preparing with a calm heart and trusting in God’s direction can help us stay clear-headed in emergencies.

When making these plans, pray for God’s guidance. Ask Him to bless your plans and give you discernment for each decision. In times of chaos, His voice will bring peace and clarity to you and your family.

Having a communication and evacuation plan is a crucial part of preparedness. Emergencies can come with little warning, and these plans give you the confidence to act quickly and wisely. The goal is to stay connected, stay informed, and have a safe route out if needed.
