Why Everyone Should Prep!

September is National Preparedness Month—a time when communities are encouraged to think ahead, make plans, and strengthen their ability to face unexpected challenges. While many people think preparedness is only for survivalists or those who expect the worst, the truth is this: preparedness is for everyone. Emergencies don’t discriminate, and as Christians, we are called to live with wisdom and discernment.

Being prepared isn’t about fear—it’s about stewardship. It’s about using the resources God has given us wisely, protecting our families, and being ready to serve others in times of need.

Proverbs 22:3 reminds us: “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.”

Let’s explore both the practical foundations of preparedness and the spiritual readiness we need as followers of Christ.

The Practical Side: Foundations of Preparedness

Preparedness begins with the basics. When a storm hits, when the power goes out, or when supply chains fail, those who have thought ahead are equipped to handle disruptions.

Here are a few foundational steps everyone can take:

  1. Food and Water: Keep enough nonperishable food and clean water to sustain your household for several days. It’s not about stockpiling in fear—it’s about ensuring your family doesn’t go hungry in a crisis.

  2. Emergency Supplies: Flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, medications, and a way to stay warm or cool depending on the season. These items may seem small, but in the middle of an emergency, they become priceless.

  3. Communication and Planning: Make sure your family knows what to do in an emergency. Have a communication plan, meeting spots, and ways to reach one another if cell towers go down.

Preparedness isn’t just about self-preservation. When we are equipped, we’re also able to help neighbors, care for the vulnerable, and demonstrate Christ’s love in practical ways.

The Spiritual Side: Readiness of the Heart

Physical preparedness is only half the picture. True readiness begins with the heart. Jesus said in Matthew 24:44, “So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”

Just as storms and disasters remind us of life’s uncertainty, Scripture reminds us that our ultimate hope is not in our supplies, but in Christ.

Spiritual preparedness means:

  1. Walking Daily with God: Stay rooted in prayer, the Word, and fellowship with other believers. These disciplines strengthen us when chaos comes.

  2. Guarding Against Fear: Preparedness is about peace, not panic. 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us that God has given us a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.

  3. Living as a Witness: When others are shaken, we can be a steady light that points them to the true source of security—Jesus Christ.

Why should everyone prep? Because life is uncertain. Emergencies will come. And God calls us to live wisely, both practically and spiritually. When we prepare, we honor God with our stewardship, we protect our families, and we position ourselves to serve others in their time of need.

But above all, we prepare our hearts. Supplies may run out, but the presence of Christ never fails. As we take action during National Preparedness Month, let’s remember: true preparedness isn’t just about having a stocked pantry—it’s about having a ready heart.

Stay vigilant. Stay prepared. Stay grounded in Christ.
